The first text by Robert Gramsch, aims to give a short introduction into a relatively new methodological approach to medieval sources - the social network analysis. The author suggests that the investigation of medieval social groups, of the process of their institutionalization and of the formation of their specific group consciousness can obviously benefit greatly from network analytical perspectives and methods. He stresses the fact, that if we consider medieval groups, we have to keep in mind that there is a rather diffuse boundary between informal and institutionalized forms. According to R. Gramsch’s conclusions the network theory can help to close this gap by showing the interrelation between both types and by achieving a better understanding of the circumstances, which lead to the institutionalization of groups. In the second chapter David Kalhous focuses on possibilities of research of the communication mechanisms used by the peripheral society of Bohemians to strengthen its internal integrity, local interpretations of this identity, and integration in the peripheral community through active reception of texts. Dalibor Janiš stresses the role, which played both of the Provincial Courts, Czech and also Moravian in the development of the Estates of the nobility. He draws attention to the fact, that the Provincial Courts of Justice did not only represent the judicial institutions but they were the important political forum for the nobility and as such they played the role of the expression of the collective identity of the Czech and Moravian nobility on the level of law. Przemysław Wiszewski concentrates on the problem of creation of the regional and local identity on the example of the Medieval Silesia and shows that local, regional, or even state identities existed side by side and ready to be activated in the communicative space of medieval Silesian society. Paul Srodecki focuses on the allegorical presentation of one’s own country as an antemurale Christianitatis (“forewall of Christianity”) and demonstrates this phenomenon as one of the crucial motives of self-demarcation of the Latin medieval West. He points to the fact that in Hungary, Poland and Croatia in particular, but also in the Mediterranean area, on the Iberian Peninsula and in the Baltic states, the concepts were developed from the Middle Ages onwards, which stylized these countries and societies as “forewalls/bulwarks of Christianity” – later secularized as “forewalls/bulwarks of Europe”. In the following chapter Stefan Eichert aims to discuss how archaeological research and national consciousness interact with and influence each other by means of a case study from Carinthia, a region in the south of Austria bordering Slovenia. In this context he focuses especially on the connection between modern national consciousness and early medieval ethnic identity respectively the imagination that we have of early medieval people’s identities. The book is concluded by the chapter by Michaela Antonín Malaníková, who explores the potential of social network analysis applied to the medieval urban sources of Brno, focusing on marriage strategies of late medieval power elites as one of the distinctive features of their identity.

Abstract:
The political system of the medieval German empire can be understood as a network of princely and comital actors which acted under the conditions of Fritz Heider´s theory of structural balance. The „Empire as a network of princes“ constituted a complex and interdependent system which was formed by numerous interactions of positive or negative character like kinship, political alliances, personal contacts (e.g. document witness), territorial or status competition, legal and military conflicts and so on. This political environment also determinated the royal activities: Frictions and conflicts between the princes must have a negative impact on the relation of both Staufian sovereigns. With the help of network-analytical methods the monograph analyses the political system of Germany during a period of ten years and gives new answers to some long-discussed questions: Did Henry VII. really offended the princes?  Why did he lose the support of the German princes in such a dramatical way?

This volume contains a collective biography of those students of the medieval university of Erfurt (founded in 1392), for whom a study of the iura (canon and civil law) can be demonstrated. On the base of a prosopographical apparatus of more than 700 biographies (available on CD-ROM) their social antecedents, their courses of studies, their careers and professional activities are analyzed.
The book tries to find statistically supported answers for questions, which have been discussed by German constitutional, legal and social historians for a long time; questions which can be summarized under the term “Verwissenschaftlichung” of governmental action in late medieval Germany. The volume also presents a contribution to the history of the medieval university of Erfurt from a prosopographical perspective.

For a long time, the university of Erfurt was regarded as the third oldest university of Germany. During the Great Western Schism a first papal privilege, dated in 1379, had to be replaced by another one in 1389. Finally, in 1392 the university opened the doors – few years after Heidelberg (1386) and Cologne (1389). The monograph describes the long prehistory of the university of Erfurt since the 13th century and analyses the events that led to the foundation of the university. It is shown that the first privilege of 1379 was crucial for the foundation, which can only be understood in the historical context of this time. Obviously, also the founders of the university (a circle of clerics, which is reconstructed in the book) considered the year 1379 to be date of the birth of the university.

The social network analysis (SNA) is a promising instrument in medievistic research. In a weakly institutionalised face-to-face society concrete social relations and interactions were obviously very important. Particularly, historians are interested in the problem of network dynamics, because historical processes can be understood as the development of networks in time. One of the most important factors, which influences a given network, are conflicts. We can model mathematically their emergent effects using Fritz Heiders concept of the so called structural balance. The paper shortly introduces the monograph „The Empire as a network of princes“, which uses SNA techniques and structural balance for modelling and explaining a large 13th-century political network.

Originally the term ´university´ describes a group (community) of persons who are associated by an oath. That´s why the medieval ´universitas magistrorum et scolarium´ first of all can be regarded as a large social network. Hence the weakly institutionalised medieval university is a perfect object of investigation for prosopography and network analysis. A lot of serial sources like university registers, papal letters and charters can provide the necessary data. In the paper it is shown, how a concrete network of clerics evolved into an institution: the medieval university of Erfurt (founded 1379/92).

The pre-modern university was in no way only a place of scientific learning and discussion, it was also a social space which was characterised by intensive social interactions and by the appreciation of individual and collective honour. The academic corporation of the ´universitas magistrorum et scolarium´ was a self-governing institution with a relatively simple but efficient structure and with written and unwritten rules of decision making. The individual social rank also determined someones position within the university. Furthermore, academic life was dominated by the ubiquitous system of medieval patronage and clientele. The academic ceremonial played a very important role in terms of stabilising this social system and establishing a group-specific habitus – a phenomenon which can be described by the model of symbolic capital (Pierre Bourdieu). From this point of view the rise of the humanists in the late 15th century appears to be a radical cultural change which challenged the traditional academic value system.

The article presents a network of clerics from Germany and Italy who studied in Paris and made career in the German church and in the Roman curia. The main protagonist is Albrecht II. von Käfernburg-Schwarzburg, the archbishop of Magdeburg (1205-1232). He originated from a noble German family. His granduncle Adalbert II. von Saarbrücken was archbishop of Mainz in 1138-1141. Albrecht benefited from the nepotistic promotion of his relative Konrad von Querfurt who was bishop of Hildesheim and Würzburg (1194-1202). He studied in Hildesheim and Paris and finally became archbishop in 1205. Albrecht´s and Konrad´s careers were connected with the German throne conflict between Staufians and Guelfs (1198-1218) and with the politics of Pope Innocent III. who was the most important representative of the Parisian “old boys network” which is presented here. The article shows typical career strategies and underlines the importance of personal relations in a face-to-face society which can be explored and analysed by means of prosopography and network analytical approaches.

This prosopographical survey deals with the biography of Henry of Gerbstedt, provost of St. Mary in Erfurt (d. 1451). Specific attention is given to his academic career and the personal networks, he build up during his stay at the Papal court (Romana curia) at the beginning of the 15th century. He worked there for more than ten years at the papal court of justice (Rota Romana). Thanks to his professional experiences and good personal contacts he became dean and later provost of the collegiate church of Erfurt. When he settled there, he joined the university of Erfurt and became a leading member of the faculty of law. Later he founded in Erfurt the college of jurists, called „Collegium Marianum“.

The paper explores the collective biography of a network of medieval scholars originating from the region of Westphalia, which is closely linked with the history of the universities of Erfurt, Leipzig and Rostock and of the Hanseatic and diocesan town Lübeck during the 15th century. The first protagonist of this circle is Konrad of Dryburg, who played an important role in the process of foundation of the university of Erfurt after 1389. He was a friend of Konrad of Soltau and the well-known chronicler Dietrich of Niem. The paper reconstructs the “genealogy” of jurists from Westphalia, who were students of Konrad von Dryburg and his successors at the above mentioned universities. This prosopographical survey shows the importance of personal contacts for medieval academic and professional careers and demonstrates the potential of a network analytical approach for a better understanding of the late medieval society.

The political system of the medieval German empire can be understood as a network of princely and comital actors which acted under the conditions of structural balance (Fritz Heider). The „Empire as a network of princes“ constituted a complex and interdependent system which was formed by numerous interactions of positive or negative character like kinship, political alliances, personal contacts (e.g. document witness), territorial or status competition, legal and military conflicts and so on. The presentation gives a short overview of the content of my monograph “Das Reich als Netzwerk der Fürsten” (2013). It illustrates some of its theoretical and methodological aspects, especially the principles of structural balance and the structure of the database. Various sociograms of the “network of princes” show the dynamical development of German politics between 1225 and 1235.

It is a very wellknown fact that the medieval and early modern church was characterised by a strong clientelism. The so called nepotism wasn´t regarded as a deficiency, in fact it was a unwritten rule to help relatives, compatriots or friends to make career.  Therefore network phenomena were omnipresent in medieval church. Historical network analysis as a new research instrument can deepen our understanding of their lifes and church history in general.

The talk discusses the reasons for the rapid downfall of the number of matriculations at the German universities during the 1520s. The „most fundamental existential crisis of the German university system” (Matthias Asche) obviously was determined by the beginning of the reformation. Anti-intellectual criticism by Martin Luther and radical reformers like Andreas Karlstadt was combined with the abrupt loss of authority of the catholic church and the growing uncertainty of the prospects of traditional ecclesiastical careers of scholars. Furthermore, the talk explains the catastrophic character of the downfall with another, hitherto unknown effect. The talk discusses the development of the number of matriculations in Germany during the 15th and early 16th century and shows that directly before the start of the reformation we can observe a sort of “market bubble” of student frequency at the German universities which suddenly collapsed after 1520. In a final step the talk analyses the concrete process of the rise and fall of the matriculation numbers in 1500-1530 as an indicator of the structure of the German university system in this time.

The talk introduces into the modeling and mathematical analysis of high medieval political networks. It discusses the phenomenon of the high vicissitude of the medieval “political climate” which is emblematised by the well-known symbol of the “rota fortunae”. From a network analytical perspective this phenomenon can be explained by the complexity of political networks and the lack of institutional structures. Political institutions like the Kurfürstenkolleg had their origins in these ephemeral personal networks, whose structures were consolidated over longer periods of time.

Mapping MEDieval CONflicts tests the explanatory power of concepts of network analysis for phenomena of political conflict in medieval societies. MEDCON uses the relational structuring provided by modern software not simply as instrument for the organisation of data, but as heuristic tool for the reconstruction and analysis of the relational character of social phenomena of the past which is at the same time also of high relevance for modern-day discussions on the (in)stability of political frameworks. The team at the Institute for Medieval Research includes specialists for the medieval Western Europe, Byzantium, Archaeology, Historical Geography and Geo-informatics; PI is Dr. Johannes Preiser-Kapeller. At the workshop new theoretical approaches to these phenomena shall be discussed. Contributors are PD Dr. Robert-Gramsch (Jena), Prof. Dr. Stefan Thurner (Wien), Dr. Johannes Preiser-Kapeller (Wien).

Session 212 at the International Medieval Congress Leeds 2018 (Monday 2 July 2018: 14.15-15.45)
The techniques and the conceptual framework of network analysis have recently found their way into historical scholarship. Several important endeavours, such as the establishment of the Journal of Historical Network Research, testify to the growing interest of historians in network analysis and more generally in structured relational data. This panel, intended as the inception of a series recurring annually at the IMC, aims at gathering some of the otherwise rather dispersed papers building on network analysis, applying this methodology to medieval material, bringing palpable results of interest to scholars from the respective fields of expertise, and promoting comparison and debate. This year's sessions pay special attention to processes of governance accessed through networks extracted from diplomatic sources, and to medieval learning and intertextuality accessed through networks of manuscripts, authors, and citations.

Entangled Worlds. Network analysis and complexity theory
in historical and archaeological research

International Conference, April 13th-15th 2016 (Vienna)

Venue: Institute for Medieval Research, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Wohllebengasse 12-14, 1040 Vienna
Organisers: Institute for Medieval Research (IMAFO), Austrian Academy of Sciences (project MEDCON) - Austrian Archaeological Institute (OeAI)

Outline: While the term “network” has been used abundantly in historical and archaeological research in the last years, the actual number of studies taking into account the methodology of network analysis is increasing, but still limited. The reluctance of scholars to adapt tools of network analysis can be also connected with the conceptual and terminological divide between humanities and formal sciences. At the same time, the user-friendliness of software tools may tempt others to use them as “black boxes” in order to produce a variety of figures without being aware of the underlying concepts.
Against this background, the project “Mapping medieval conflicts: a digital approach towards political dynamics in the pre-modern period (MEDCON)” at IMAFO, funded within the go!digital-programme of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, aims at an evaluation of concepts of social and spatial network analysis for studying phenomena of political conflict in medieval societies. For this purpose, a generalizable work flow from data input on the basis of medieval sources to the creation, visualisation and analysis of social and spatial network models and their web-based publication and presentation is created.
Even more, a cooperation was established with the Austrian Archaeological Institute (OeAI) within the framework of the DARIAH-network of the European Union with a focus on “Spatial and social network analysis”. The aim is to foster the development of and reflection on tools of network analysis for the study of complex phenomena of the past in exchange with scholars both from the humanities and from the sciences.

For this purpose, the conference “Entangled Worlds. Network analysis and complexity theory in historical and archaeological research” will assemble specialists from various disciplines of historical and archaeological studies as well as mathematics, physics and computer sciences in order to discuss in particular the following four overlapping topics:
• Entangling data: the organisation of relational data on the basis of historical and archaeological evidence (ontologies, software, workflows, standards)
• Entangling texts and people: the modelling and analysis of networks on the basis of textual evidence and narratives (prosopography, diplomatics, epistolography, historiography)
• Entangling sites and artefacts: the modelling and analysis of networks on the basis of archaeological evidence (objects, places, mobilities and exchange)
• Entangling dynamics: the modelling of complex past societies and networks (spatial and temporal dynamics, scales and mechanisms of networks, mathematical modelling)

The conference will be accompanied by a presentation of approaches and tools to the wider public. Proceedings will be published in a collective (peer reviewed) volume. For invited participants, expenses for travel and accommodation will be covered. Speakers will be contacted and invited directly by the organisers.

While interdisciplinary research into the relational paradigm has produced an impressive body of work across the social and political sciences and also, increasingly, among historians, there is as yet no international medium of publication devoted to the study of networks in their historical contexts. This has put scholars with an interest in historical network research—both historians and historical sociologists—at a great disadvantage, and has meant that they have long been accustomed to publishing research papers in non-historical journals. The situation for historians interested in network research is further complicated by academic and cultural idiosyncrasies, since much of the groundbreaking and recent research into historical networks in the English-speaking world has been carried out by historical sociologists, rather than social historians, and has thus remained mostly outside the sphere of traditional academic history departments. This has naturally also influenced the means of publication for research in this area; preferred journals such as Social Networks and the American Journal of Sociology focus heavily on methodological and theoretical aspects. In short, there are no international publications devoted to the study of networks (social and otherwise) from a specifically historical perspective.
This is the gap that the Journal of Historical Network Research is keen to fill. Its aim is to publish outstanding and original contributions which apply the theories and methodologies of social network analysis to historical research, to help advance the epistemological and theoretical understanding of social network analysis in the historical, social and political sciences, and to promote empirical research on historical social interactions. The journal aims to promote the interplay between different areas of historical research (in the broadest sense), social and political sciences, and different research traditions and disciplines, while strengthening the dialogue between network research and “traditional” historical research. The journal will serve as a meeting place for the traditional hermeneutics of historical research and its concomitant emphasis on contextualisation and historical source criticism (as present in traditional academic historical journals) on the one hand, and the theory-heavy and/or sometimes overly technical discussion of methodological and technological issues (which predominates in publications focused on “pure” or sociological network research) on the other. All contents are made available free of charge to readers and authors following Open Access principles.

In recent years, a new method to study narrative texts was introduced,
using network analysis. The approach is original and adventurous; instead of
focusing on the literary or narrative bases of the texts, it involves extracting
data for a formalised analysis of network structures. These are determined from
descriptions of events in the texts and their statistical properties are studied using
standard network-analysis tools. In this way comparisons between chronologically
and geographically different texts are possible. Furthermore, we can compare these
textual networks with real social networks, studied by modern sociologists or,
indeed, fictional ones. These studies have clearly shown that social-network analysis
forms an effective bridge between very different disciplines. It can connect scientists
and humanists in joint research; it can depict old research questions in a new light
and connect different phenomena belonging to the worlds of nature and culture.
The key to this bridge is the understanding of complex systems and their emergent
properties. But we are still in the very beginning of exploring these issues and in
developing an adequate methodology as we seek to incorporate a number of tools
recently developed. Here we attempt to cross the bridge from the humanities side.
To this end, we present the results of two studies of medieval sources. Our focus is
on visualisation and interpretation of local network properties, an approach which is
complementary to complexity analyses. We show that the method can offer powerful
augmentation to traditional approaches to the humanities and we outline ways in
which these can be developed for the future.
